Symptoms
Hip pain can have various symptoms and causes. Here are some common symptoms associated with hip pain:
- Pain: The primary symptom is pain in the hip joint. The pain can range from a dull ache to sharp or stabbing pain. It may be felt in the hip itself, groin, buttocks, or even radiate to the thigh or knee.
- Stiffness: Hip pain can cause stiffness and reduced range of motion in the hip joint. Activities like walking, bending, or rotating the hip may be difficult or painful.
- Difficulty walking: The pain and stiffness in the hip can lead to a noticeable limp or difficulty bearing weight on the affected leg while walking.
- Clicking or popping: Some individuals with hip pain may experience clicking, popping, or grinding sensations within the hip joint during movement. These sensations can indicate issues with the structures within the hip joint.
- Limited mobility: Hip pain can restrict the normal mobility of the hip joint, making it challenging to perform daily activities such as sitting, standing, or climbing stairs.
- Groin or thigh pain: Hip pain can often be felt in the groin or front of the thigh. This pain may indicate problems within the hip joint itself or issues related to the surrounding structures.
- Numbness or tingling: In some cases, hip pain may be associated with numbness, tingling, or a pins-and-needles sensation that radiates into the thigh or knee. This symptom suggests potential nerve involvement.
Causes
The causes of hip pain can include:
- Osteoarthritis: This degenerative joint disease can affect the hip joint, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
- Hip bursitis: Inflammation of the bursae (small fluid-filled sacs) around the hip joint can result in hip pain, particularly on the outside of the hip.
- Hip labral tear: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that lines the socket of the hip joint. A tear in the labrum can cause hip pain, particularly with certain movements.
- Tendonitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the hip joint, such as the iliotibial (IT) band or the hip flexor tendons, can lead to hip pain.
- Hip impingement: Hip impingement occurs when there is abnormal contact between the ball and socket of the hip joint, leading to pain and potential damage to the joint structures.
- Hip dysplasia: This is a condition in which the hip socket is abnormally shallow, causing instability, pain, and potential joint damage.
- Muscle or tendon strains: Overuse, muscle imbalances, or sudden movements can strain or tear the muscles or tendons around the hip joint, resulting in hip pain.

It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional if you experience persistent or severe lower back or spinal pain, especially if it affects your daily activities or if the cause is unclear. A proper evaluation can help determine the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment options.
