Top 3 exercises to help with back pain/ stiffness

There are loads of different exercises which can help with back pain. Everyone and their granny has different advice to help with this pain from sleeping with a plank under the bed, avoiding sitting on your wallet whilst it’s in your back pocket and even yoga, Pilates and deadlifting at the gym. Now every exercise has its place and all exercise is good exercise. The only bad exercise you can do is the one that is hurting you at that present moment or one that you’re not medically cleared for with certain health conditions. Saying that, here are my top 3 exercises with lower back pain. DISCLAIMER: all exercises given by the physiotherapist at AllOutPhysiotherapy are done so following a detailed assessment and diagnosis. Speak to our physiotherapist today for further advice on lower back pain.

  1. Lay on your back and cross your leg where your calf is laying on your knee. Then stretch to the opposite side of your pain. If your pain is in the center then stretch to both sides within the limits of your pain.
  2. Sitting on a normal chair or your sofa at the edge then bending to touch the floor with your hands.
  3. Sit to stand with hands on your knees
  4. Bridging. Lay on the floor or the bed where you bend your knees to where you feel comfortable and lift your bum/lower back off the bed.

I usually incorporate a form of these exercises within your treatment programme however everyone is different and thus will need a detailed assessment in order to give the most accurate way to help you with your pain. Give them a try if you’re suffering from back pain. Tell your friends and let them know that the cure to lower back pain is only a message/ phone call away to AllOutPhysiotherapy.
